How Ecotoilets work
There are two types of ecotoilet - Aquatron (low flush) and Toatrone (waterless) They both use the same bio-chamber and Grey Water systems.
The superior performance of Ecotoilets is the Swedish patent to separate urine from faeces. Urine is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium and bacteria free. Ecotoilets collects this perfect fertiliser separately in a dark and cool tank for later use in the garden.
The solids fall into a bio-chamber for decomposition into an organic compost. The decomposition is a natural process using air, natural heat, micro-organisms and earth worms. Ventilation insures a constant air flow. The four chamber bin reduces the solids to just 5 % of their volume so the clean humus needs to be removed only once a year.
There is no smell. No chemicals. Low maintenance.
We are so confident that Ecotoilets are the best on-site sewage system that we give a money back guarantee. Ecotoilets also come with a 20 year warrantee on the separator and bio-chamber.
About the Ecotoilets Toilets
Ecotoilets are:
- Not hazardous to user's health
- Friendly to the environment.
- Easily installed and maintained below the floor in a well ventilated compartment.
The product is intended for use in areas where there is no public sewerage reticulation system, or in localities where there are difficulties with high water tables or disposal of effluent by conventional ground soakage measures.
Composting toilets have capacity for a family of 5 - plus periodic larger loading due to visitors.
Typical Ecotoilet System
Below is drawing of a typical ecotoilet system. Note that in this case there is a "fall" from top to bottom.

If you need to have grey water above the house it is a simple matter of installing a float switch operated pump drained off to a urine tank or grey water system
- Units are a leakage proof closed system
- Composters are ventilated to allow decomposition without smell
Bio-Chambers
The low flush Aquatron, or the waterless Toatrone use the same four chamber bio-compositor.
The round composter - pictured below
- only 615 high so compatible with many sites
- four partition system
- top access for easy compost removal
- lastest design, unexcelled
- easy to install

The Grey water System
Ecotoilets also supply a Grey Water system to dispose of waste water from the house, bathroom, kitchen and laundry and the leachate from the composting chamber. If you install a Toatron the household flows are reduced by 45% and soakage fields can be smaller.
The separated urine also goes into the Grey Water System. It is fed into the top inlet and fills the first tank up to the connector pipe which joins the two tanks together. When the level of the first tank reaches the height of the connector tube, fluid runs into the second tank. Ecotoilets have a unique design which imparts a swirling movement to the fluid. This efficiently assists with the natural process which is carried out by the grey water tanks.
There is a cleanable filter, which stops anything bigger than 2-3 mm going off to the effluent treatment.
After the above treatment, the effluent is safe to be dispersed into the ground.
Normally about 10 to 20 m of perforated pipe (50-80 mm dia.) is placed in a trench as in the drawing.
Alternatively, a percolating garden may be used if the ground is not of a type that suits the trench - rocky, heavy clay, etc will cause this to be necessary. The small shrubs planted will treat the effluent.
